In a major leap for the South African bakkie market, GWM has introduced several pioneering features with the launch of the all-new P-Series P500 double cab. As the first petrol-electric hybrid bakkie in the country, the P500 is a demonstration of GWM’s intent to be bold, especially in a segment typically dominated by traditional powertrains and designs.

One of the most notable additions to the P500 is its 325-volt electric motor integrated into the hybrid system. This marks the first time such a high-voltage electric motor has been utilised in a South African bakkie, giving the P500 a significant power advantage. With a combined output of 255 kW and 648 N.m of torque, it is now the second most powerful double cab on the local market after the Ford Ranger Raptor (292 kW/583 N.m).
However, though the hybrid system should theoretically aid fuel efficiency, our experience with this powertrain in the Tank 300 saw it return an average of 15 L/100 km. Fair warning: expect a higher real-world fuel return on the P500 than the claimed 9.8 L/100 km…
P500’s interior
Beyond the powertrain, the P500 introduces a range of features never before seen on bakkies in South Africa. The P500 is the first bakkie to offer a panoramic sunroof with tilt and slide functions. This feature, typically reserved for premium SUVs and sedans, represents a shift in the expectations of what a bakkie can deliver in terms of comfort and style. Furthermore, the front seats now offer an 8-option massage function, and the rear units are also electronically adjustable rear seats with adjustable headrests, heating and cooling.
In the loading area, the tailgate is equally unique, with its split design offering two modes of operation: the conventional drop-down opening or a 40:60 barn-door style opening. In essence, GWM challenges the traditional perception of bakkies with its new P500. As such, South African consumers are paying witness to probably a new bakkie era.
