Audi expanded its SUV line-up today when it introduced the all-new Q2 at the Geneva Motor Show.
Almost in an effort to prevent the inevitable questions about Audi’s cookie cutter design language, Audi Head of Design Marc Lichte issued this statement at the launch of the new model: “In the Audi Q2 we have developed a distinctively geometric form language with model-specific design characteristics. The car exhibits an independent character within the Q family”.
Small but rugged looking
At the front, Audi’s signature singleframe grille takes pride of place. A low roof line that descends and merges into the C-pillars with color offset blades, a nifty little design cue borrowed from bigger brother R8. A roof spoiler extends the roof line and a diffuser, that has an underbody-protection look, sits on the lower part of the rear bumper.
The dimensions of the Q2 gives it an overall height of 1 51o mm and width of 1 79o mm. Total vehicle length 4 19o mm with a wheelbase of 2 60o mm.
Highly connected
The Q2 is equipped with a standard MMI screen that is positioned high on the instrument panel. The infotainment system can be operated by a rotary/push-button control and two buttons on the center tunnel.
Engine options
The Q2 will be available in Europe with six different engines. Along with a 1,0-litre three-cylinder TFSI, two four-cylinder petrol engines are offered. The smaller displaces 1,4- and the larger 2,0-litres. In addition, three four-cylinder diesel engines are available in 1,6 and 2,0-litres.
Their power output ranges from 85 kW to 140 kW (190 hp). As an alternative to the six-speed manual transmission, Audi also offers the S tronic dual clutch transmission with seven speeds for all engines. Both engines might also be combined with a quattro permanent all-wheel drive system as standard equipment.
Installed at the rear on the front-wheel drive versions is a semi-independent suspension, while the quattro models have a four-link suspension.
SA introduction
Audi South Africa will introduce the Audi Q2 locally in the first quarter of 2017. All engine details, specification and pricing will be available closer to its market introduction.
