The 41 year old movie icon is set to make a comeback after the Texas-based company that owns the right to the name teased its upcoming EV. Get used to the puns because is it back to the future with the DeLorean Motor Company?
The futuristic car conceptualised by John DeLorean that became an instant hit in the Back to the Future series never had the same success in sales over the two years of its production between 1981 and 1983. After it became defunct on the 26th of October, 1982 it did continue to live on in popular culture until 1995 when Brit Stephen Wynne founded the DeLorean Motor Company which specialised in repairs and rebuilds of original DMCs.
Multiple attempts to bring back the historic nameplate have been attempted by the new company with replicas being built and EV conversions tinkered with but it seems as though this time the project may actually materialise into something tangible.
The Texas based company has now sent out a tweet containing a video that confirms that a luxury, gullwing-doored EV with similar proportions to the original model is on the cards. It would be hard to top the timeless design Giorgetto Giugiaro put to paper almost half a century ago so why not commission the company he founded; Italdesign to modernise the reboot? Well, that is exactly what may happen after the 83 year old Car Designer of the Century’s design house shared a teaser as a birthday tweet for the stainless-steel bodied model.
Italdesign is also rumoured to have entered into an official partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering, affiliated to the legendary Formula 1 team that Frank Williams first conceived. British automobile magazine; Autocar says the partnership will focus on “an open-source EV platform for manufacturers of low-volume cars.”
No other information on the Delorean Motor Company project has been shared other than the fact that it will utilise an electric powertrain and be finished in peak luxury. If the Back to the Future puns aren’t your thing you are probably not going to enjoy its new name either since we can expect the new DeLorean EVolved to break cover sometime this year.
