Consumers looking for a pure blank canvas sportscar experience in the Japanese market can have this in the base-spec Toyota GR 86 in RC guise. In order to make the compact sportscar more accessible, the manufacturer has gone back to base roots and stripped out as many comfort features as possible.
For just ¥2 799 000 (approximately R375 000) you can have a Toyota GR 86 experience with 16-inch steel wheels as well as the removal of the spare wheel, rear foglamp, boot lighting and padding around the engine bay, floor and muffler.
Keeping things as simple as possible in the cabin, the Toyota GR 86 has also had its touchscreen infotainment system removed, with a black plastic panel replacing it on the dashboard. Other than these exclusions, this RC trim retains its leather-upholstered seats, air conditioning system, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel and digital instrument display.
Toyota South Africa has confirmed that the Toyota GR 86 will be available in the South African market but the launch date and pricing will only be revealed next year. It is unlikely that this base RC trim will be sold here with it.
The Toyota GR 86 was unveiled in April this year as a continuation of the popular GT 86. Given its dynamic prowess, the product was slotted under the Gazoo Racing division along the Supra and Yaris.
Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 2,4-litre flat-four engine with 173 kW and 250 N.m of torque which can be revved to a maximum of 7 400 r/min. This sends power to the rear axle via a six-speed manual or automatic transmission option. With this, the GR 86 will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6,3 seconds; 1,1 seconds faster than the last generation.
