The folks over at Alpina have unwrapped their upgraded B5, a 330 km/h sedan based on BMW’s 5 Series and boasting 457 kW.
Yes, BMW’s twin-turbo 4,4 litre V8 has been tuned to deliver 457 kW and 800 N.m, the latter on tap from 2 000 to 5 000 r/min. This, says Alpina, results in “significantly improved throttle response” and “more engaging power delivery”.
The B5 sedan will hit 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 3,4 seconds before reaching 200 km/h in 11,3 seconds. The 460 kW M5 Competition, for the sake of comparison, is a tenth quicker to three figures.
Alpina has also upgraded the ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission to “cope with the engine’s high torque”. The self-shifter furthermore gains a “complete redesign of the electronics and mechatronics” for “precise operation and responsiveness”.
The BMW specialist has also added its sport suspension setup, which it promises offers “a broad spectrum of driving experiences” thanks to the electronically controlled dampers’ “pronounced range of adjustment in compression and rebound”.
A set of 20-inch, 20-spoke alloys is part of the package, too, reducing unsprung mass by around 25 percent. They’re wrapped in Pirelli P Zero rubber measuring 255/35 ZR20 at the front and 295/30 ZR20 at the rear.
The Alpina braking system, meanwhile, comprises four-piston fixed callipers with 395 mm discs up front and floating callipers with 398 mm discs at the rear. Inside, the digital instrument display gains the latest Alpina design (with red pointers on a blue background).
Alpina also offers the D5 S, which draws 300 kW and 800 N.m from its triple-turbo 3,0-litre straight-six diesel engine.
