A high performance version of the BMW X4, the M40i, has been officially revealed following its leak to the public a few days ago.
The M40i has very subtle differences from the standard model in terms of appearance. The new model will be equipped with a set of optional 20-inch M light-alloy double-spoke wheels with the “Ultra High Performance” tyre mix (front 245/40 R20, rear 275/35 R20) and a pair of chrome black valve controlling exhaust pipes. The panels on the new M40i remain unchanged. M emblems will also be placed throughout the steering wheel, gear shift lever and door sills to constantly remind the driver about the presence of M power within the vehicle.
The new 3,0-litre six-cylinder TwinPower turbocharged petrol engine will deliver 265 kW and 465 N.m of torque that will see the M40i accelerate from 0-100 km/h in a claimed 4,9 seconds. It will, however be electronically limited to a top speed of 250 km/h. Consumption figures of the combined NEDC test state that the M40i will use 8,6 l/100 km.
The X4 M40i will also have a more dynamic suspension in order to compensate for the extra power. Stronger springs and stabilizers, increased camber on the front axle and an adaptive suspension are some of the additions that will provide this micro SAC with the stability it needs. In addition, the xDrive four-wheel drivetrain will be equipped as standard.
The formation of this new M40i engine is derived from the standard 3,0-litre straight six seen in the xDrive35i, but upgraded with components from the M3’s S55 power plant. Parts such as pistons with an adapted top ring, high power spark plugs and a forged steel crankshaft with bearings are used to create this new motor.
An eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission will be delivering this power to the wheels with a launch control as standard that BMW claim to be an “easy to use” feature.
Local pricing has not yet been revealed for the X4 M40i.
