Classic Cobra with modern touches? Meet the Superformance MKIII-R…

Superformance has released its latest Shelby Cobra replica, with the new MKIII-R gaining refreshed exterior styling and an updated interior.

Built under license, the MKIII-R’s body is formed with laminated fibreglass and sports “scalloped” fenders and bonnet, black mesh air vents plus a front splitter and rear diffuser for improved downforce. A set of 15-inch Halibrand replica alloy wheels and side-exit exhaust pipes round off the updated look.

In the cabin, the MKIII-R pays homage to the original design with “original” pedals, gear shifter, hand brake lever and latch-lock seatbelts. A wooden Moto-Lita steering wheel and original Smith gauges and Lucas switches add a classic touch to the cabin.

The MKIII-R can be fitted with a choice of four Ford V8 engines: a 5,0-, 5,7-, 7,0- or 7,5-litre unit. These engines are mated to either a five-speed Tremec manual gearbox or four-speed Ford torque-converter automatic transmission. A ZF limited-slip differential is included.

The Cobra sits on a conventional heavy-duty TIG-welded ladder-frame chassis (with crumple zones), while the front and rear axles are fully independent and sport custom coil-over shocks. Safety is bolstered by a chassis-mounted stainless steel roll bar. Wilwood ventilated brake discs with four-piston callipers provide stopping power.

Interestingly, Superformance says all of its products are “supplied complete, but without engines and transmissions”. The selection, purchase and installation of the drivetrain are “the responsibility of the purchaser”.
