Forging forward with the locally loved Corolla nameplate, the crossover SUV launched in 2021 has proven an immense success for Toyota. The model has now been put through a Gazoo Racing regiment and as a result, we get to feast our eyes on the Corolla Cross GR-S.
Topping sales charts and emerging as South African Car of the Year, the Toyota Corolla Cross has become a crucial model in the local divisions lineup. Gazoo Racing has now imparted some of their sporty prowess on the recently unveiled Corolla Cross GR-S.
Gazoo Racing hierarchy
The racing division of Toyota is divided up into four levels; represented as a pyramid, the first layer is GR Parts which allows customers to inject their normal model variant with GR flavour. This is followed by the GR-Sport moniker which offers cosmetic and dynamic handling enhancements from the factory – models such as the Hilux and Land Cruiser 300 wave this flag while the newcomer Corolla Cross GR-S has become the latest edition in this category. The third tier is occupied by fully-fledged GR performance models like the GR86, GR Yaris and GR Supra, while the fourth and final layer is GRMN – which represents the highest level of performance tuning.
Upgrades to the new Corolla Cross GR-S
Based on this, we know that the new Corolla Cross GR-S based on Xr grade will feature some spicey upgrades from the recently reopened Prospecton factory. This includes a bespoke exterior package, three bi-tone colour options with black-roof treatment, black 18″ alloy wheels, GR badging and unique GR-themed interior accents.
Delving deeper beyond what the eye can immediately see, the model has received revised suspension componentry and tuning, complemented by a recalibrated power steering module (EPS) to deliver more responsive handling, steering wheel feedback and cornering prowess. The model employs the existing 1.8-litre 2ZR-FE petrol engine, coupled to a CVT transmission with seven pre-programmed ‘steps’ to simulate a close-ratio transmission in manual shifting mode.
