There have been rumours circulating around a possible four-door version of the Mercedes-AMG GT for quite some time now. Recent news, however, suggests that this car, to be dubbed the GT4, is soon on its way and we’ll be seeing it at Geneva next month with a production ready model to hit the roads late-2018.
The GT4 and is set to replace the CLS Shooting Brake as a Panamera-fighting super saloon and is said to be the brainchild of AMG head Tobias Moers. It will have the same aluminium structure used on the GT but it will be developed around the MRA platform currently used for the C-, E- and S63.
As a result of the conjoining of these two structures, the platform of the GT4 will be unique compared to everything else in the AMG line-up. Air body control, which is currently found on the E63 S, has not been confirmed.
The GT4 will make use of the twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 connected to AMG’s 4Matic+ drivetrain. It has been suggested that this model will deliver more than the E63 S’s power figure of 450 kW. There’s also a possibility that the new turbocharged straight-six engine to be used in the E50 Coupe will find its way in this car, too.
In terms of design, it’s been said that the GT4 will bear a striking resemblance to the AMG GT as envisioned in the renders above. It seems that the brand hopes to market it as a four-door equivalent of the sportscar.
The GT4 concept will be on display right next to the highly anticipated Project One which is also set to be revealed at Geneva next month.
