Since its launch in South Africa in 2013, the Ford EcoSport has sold up a storm, regularly making it onto our monthly list of SA’s best-selling passenger vehicles. Customers in North America, however, have not had access to the Fiesta-based subcompact crossover.
But that will change in 2018, when this US-spec model – recently revealed in Los Angeles – goes on sale in the States.
The American model – which essentially represents a facelift – looks a little different to the SA-spec model and seems to have more standard equipment, too. Some of the engine options will also differ.
Visually, the EcoSport adopts an appearance that helps it fall in line with the larger new Kuga, while still retaining the current shape.
Engines set to be on offer in the US include the turbocharged 1,0-litre three-cylinder engine (presumably the same as the one currently offered in SA) and a turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine mated to an all-wheel drive system. Both engines come with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Not much is different in the cabin, if you exclude the centre console, which features the SYNC3 touchscreen infotainment system, new climate controls and redesigned air vents. Titanium models are furthermore fitted with a 10-speaker audio system.
So, will this Indian-built model make it to our shores as a facelift? Well, Ford Motor Company of SA is tight-lipped on its plans, saying it isn’t in a position to comment on the “exact product” nor on timing.
