Revealed in Gqeberqa on October 29, 2026, the Foton Tunland V9 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) bakkie has the BYD Shark 6 and South African-bound Chery Grootman in its sights. While the Chinese automaker has yet to confirm local pricing, it has revealed when the PHEV-powered double cab will be available in our market.
Foton Tunland V9 PHEV powertrain and performance
The new-energy Tunland V9’s PHEV powertrain comprises a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine paired with dual electric motors — the latter fed by a 32.85 kWh battery. The PHEV arrangement produces combined power and torque outputs of 350 kW and 800 N.m — figures matching that of the Grootman, which is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2026. As a reminder, the BYD Shark 6 in Performance specification produces 350 kW and 700 N.m. The Tunland V9 PHEV delivers power to all four corners via a four-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). The most powerful model in Foton’s local Tunland V9 lineup, the PHEV derivative completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in a claimed 7.9 seconds.
Foton Tunland V9 PHEV fuel consumption and range
Foton claims a combined average fuel consumption of 2.0 L/100 km when the battery pack is fully charged. However, at “low charge”, the latter figure increases to 11.7 L/100 km, the firm says. The battery serves up a claimed 100 km electric-only operating range, the company claims, with the combined driving range rated at approximately 1 000 km.
Dimensions, ground clearance and towing capacity
Standing 5 617 mm long and 2 090 mm wide, the Tunland V9 PHEV sports a 250 mm ground clearance (up 10 mm over the “standard” model). The new-energy model also boasts increased water-wading depth, at 800 vs 700 mm. The Tunland V9 PHEV has a braked towing capacity of “up to” 3 500 kg.
Foton Tunland V9 PHEV availability in South Africa
Foton’s local arm has confirmed the Tunland V9 PHEV will be available in South Africa from early next year. While local pricing has yet to be announced, it’s fair to say that this new model will be more expensive than the current range-topper, which is priced from R799 900.
