Porsche has pulled the covers from its new Taycan Cross Turismo, which arrives as a gravel-gunning wagon version of the fully electric Taycan.
Set to arrive in South Africa towards the middle of 2021, Porsche SA has already released local pricing (see below) for three of the four derivatives.
Described as the “all-rounder among electric sports cars”, the new all-paw Taycan Cross Turismo boasts added headroom for rear passengers and a maximum luggage compartment capacity in excess of 1 200 litres. The newcomer’s silhouette is defined by a roof line that falls towards the rear. The Cross Turismo furthermore features “off-road design elements” such as chunky wheel arch trim, unique lower aprons (fore and aft) and model-specific side sills.
Fitted with the off-road design package, the new Taycan Cross Turismo gains “special flaps” at the corners of the front and rear bumpers and at the edges of the sills. The Zuffenhausen-based firm says these make for a “striking exterior” as well as provide protection from stone impacts.
Adaptive three-chamber air suspension (with electronic damper control) is fitted as standard to all Taycan Cross Turismo models. The newcomer also boasts a fresh “gravel” driving mode conceived for what Porsche describes as “light off-road terrain”. With this mode selected, the ride height is raised by 30 mm, while suitable adjustments are made to the chassis systems, throttle response and rear-axle transmission.
Inside, the Cross Turismo borrows much from the standard Taycan, including the free-standing curved instrument cluster, centrally sited 10,9-inch infotainment screen and optional front passenger display. Meanwhile, a compass is installed atop the facia should the aforementioned off-road design package be specified.
As with the standard Taycan, the all-electric Cross Turismo operates with a system voltage of 800 V. The standard two-deck performance battery plus contains 33 cell modules consisting of 12 individual cells each (for a total of 396), with a listed total capacity of 93,4 kWh. Two permanently excited synchronous electric motors (one on each axle) are standard.
Four derivatives will be available. The Taycan 4 Cross Turismo features 280 kW (or 350 kW on overboost), which Porsche says is enough for a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 5,1 seconds, a top speed 220 km/h and a WLTP range of up to 456 km.
The Taycan 4S Cross Turismo, meanwhile, upgrades to 360 kW (with 420 kW on overboost), seeing off the obligatory blast to three figures in a claimed 4,1 seconds (with top speed listed as 240 km/h and range coming in up to 452 km). Next is the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo with 460 kW (and 500 kW on overboost). This version will complete the dash to 100 km/h in a claimed 3,3 seconds, before topping out at 250 km/h. Claimed range is up to 452 km.
Finally, the Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo gets the full-fat 460 kW, with 560 kW available on overboost, a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 2,9 seconds, a top speed 250 km/h and a claimed range of up to 419 km.
