As confirmed in our December 2024 issue, Haval is preparing to introduce a new H7 to South Africa. This is, however, not to be confused with the H7 recently unveiled in Haval’s home market.
The dimensions of the new Haval H7—specifically for the Chinese market—measure 4 780 mm in length, 1 895 mm in width, and 1 725 mm in height, with a modest wheelbase of 2 810 mm. The interior of the H7 is designed to accommodate five passengers comfortably and is expected to do so in a modern and spacious environment.
Rumours suggest that the Haval H7 will be powered by a plug-in hybrid system, combining a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine with an electric motor. The engine is said to generate a maximum power output of 85 kW, while the vehicle’s lithium iron phosphate battery pack, with a capacity of 27.54 kWh, offers a claimed CLTC pure electric range of 126 km.

To clarify any confusion, the version of the Haval H7 set to launch in South Africa on January 15, 2025, will showcase a different design identity. Known as the “Big Dog,” this variant has an overall length of 4 706 mm, a wheelbase of 2 610 mm, a width of 1 908 mm, and a height of 1 780 mm. The Chinese market’s Big Dog lineup includes four distinct models, each offering a choice of two turbocharged petrol engines. The first is a 1.5 T-GDI that delivers 135 kW of power and 275 N.m of torque, while the second, a 2.0 T-GDI, produces 175 kW and 385 N.m.
Transmission options vary, with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox for the 1.5 T-GDI, whereas the 2.0 T-GDI features a nine-speed dual-clutch, which allows for enhanced driving dynamics, particularly with the added option of all-wheel drive. Further details about the Haval H7 will be disclosed during its launch event in January, promising to attract significant attention in the SUV market.
Should the freshly unveiled H7 in the Chinese market be considered for South Africa (comment pending), it will most likely arrive with a different name to its “Big Dog” counterpart.
