Immediately after the launch of the latest model from the Torino based automaker, the words already lingering on the lips in the automotive world is the consideration of a hot Alfa Romeo Tonale. CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato mentioned that a final decision regarding a Quadrifoglio will be made before the end of 2022.
If you didn’t already know, the historic brand launched their second SUV a few days ago after teasing the automotive press numerous times with artistic snippets of the Tonale in the lead up to its unveiling. Despite the compelling video and impressive statistics the newcomer in the small Italian automakers portfolio will bring, auto journalists and petrolheads alike are waiting with bated breath for confirmation of a hot Alfa Romeo Tonale version.
While Jean-Phillippe Imparato has tentatively mentioned that we will have an answer before the end of 2022 on a model adorning the Quadrifoglio decal (green-four leaf clover), it will only come to fruition if it can offer the right level of performance. Digital designer X-Tomi has created a rendering of the Tonale boasting styling borrowed from the Giulia GTA.
If you think pronouncing Quadrifoglio is difficult then hold onto your seat because Daniel Tiago Guzzafame, the automaker’s global product manager stated that Alfa Romeo has “some alternatives, both with pure thermal [gasoline engine] and in the electrification world.” up their sleeves. While dropping the Ferrari derived twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V6 from the Stevlio and Giulia would make this one potent SUV, he unfortunately further hinted that “Where we are going is what we were saying before: the future Alfa Romeo will be electric.”
A smaller crossover named the Brennero is rumoured to become Alfa Romeo’s first full EV by 2025 even though it will have alternative ICE setups too. Guzzafame further mentioned that the brand’s lineup will become fully electric by 2027, meaning that the Tonale will have a relatively short lifecycle and likely be discontinued by then. We can expect more details on the Torino based automakers product lineup to be revealed in the coming weeks.
Either way, the Tonale and La Metamorfisi are signalling a future design and aesthetic direction for the brand; meaning the pretty crossover SUV’s visual characteristics will be carried over to all new models launched in the future.
