Drawing on the legacy of the discontinued Polo Cross, the current-generation Polo Robust showcases enhancements geared towards adventurous driving conditions for the South American market.
One of its most prominent features is the raised chassis, engineered to provide heightened ground clearance essential for navigating rough roads and uneven surfaces often encountered in agricultural settings. Complemented by new springs and shock absorbers, these modifications aim to bolster the vehicle’s off-road capabilities, potentially offering an attractive alternative to conventional bakkies for farm workers.

Under the surface, the Polo Robust is equipped with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine generating 62 kW of power and 101 N.m of torque. Paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox that sends power to the front wheels. This powertrain is believed to ensure sufficient performance for tackling challenging terrains while maintaining fuel efficiency—a crucial consideration for those covering extensive distances in rural areas.

In addition to its capable drivetrain, the Polo Robust boasts 15-inch alloy wheels and an electronic differential lock, enhancing safety and traction on varying landscapes. To further tailor the vehicle to the demands of agricultural work, Volkswagen has introduced two accessory kits. These kits offer added protection for both the interior and exterior, featuring items such as vinyl seat covers, rubber floor coverings, and radiator grille protectors, along with optional extras like a rubber boot mat and tow hook for increased functionality.
Despite the absence of pricing details, the targeted features and design enhancements of the Polo Robust suggest it may offer considerable value for its intended audience. Given the success of similar models in other markets, Volkswagen South Africa may want to explore the possibility of introducing the Polo Robust locally. Its purpose could make it an appealing choice for agricultural workers locally seeking a reliable and capable vehicle as an alternative to a bakkie.
