Scheduled to make local landfall in the second quarter of 2025, the T9 PHEV will serve as the opening gambit to JAC Motors South Africa’s new-energy bakkie line-up (an all-electric derivative is nearing South African introduction, the company says).
The plug-in hybrid T9 double cab’s petrol-electric powertrain comprises a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged internal combustion engine (ICE) and a duo of electric motors. The ICE component of the plug-in hybrid setup churns out 160 kW and 370 N.m of torque, the latter of which available from 2 000 r/min, while the fore and aft permanent synchronous electric motors produce 60 kW/150 N.m and 70 kW/150 N.m, respectively. Combined, the T9 PHEV is endowed with a healthy 290 kW and 670 N.m.
The dual electric-motor arrangement is coupled with a 31.2 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack, which supports AC and DC charging. JAC Motors claims the latter allows for full charge in one hour and 25 minutes, while an AC charge takes four and a half hours.

To enhance its off-road capability, the T9 PHEV features fore and aft electronic diff locks. In addition, it sports a braked towing capacity of 3 500 kg.
“We’re excited to offer South African motorists an alternative to traditional double-cab bakkies with our expanding T-Series line-up,” said Karl-Heinz Göbel, CEO of JAC Motors South Africa. “The new T9 PHEV is our first green-energy lifestyle bakkie, with the battery-electric T9 also nearing readiness for local market introduction.”
JAC Motors South Africa will announce further details of the T9 PHEV closer to its market launch in the second quarter of 2025.
