Jaecoo has announced the hybrid J5 is headed to South Africa. Here’s what you can expect…

Positioned below the J7 in Jaecoo’s crossover/SUV portfolio, in September 2025, the J5 arrived in South Africa as the second Jaecoo product in our market, with the initial model range exclusively employing a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-pot. The key word here is “initial”, as this Chery sub-brand has announced it is expanding its local J5 lineup with the introduction of a hybrid derivative.
The J5 HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) is equipped with the Chinese automaker’s Super Hybrid System (SHS), which, in this application, pairs the same 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine found in its non-electrified siblings with an electric motor. According to the brand, the J5 HEV has a combined operating range of “over” 1 000 km, based on its claimed average fuel consumption of 5.3 L/100 km. The petrol-electric J5 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, before topping out at 175 km/h.
Jaecoo J5 HEV SA Launch Date
Jaecoo has confirmed the J5 HEV will arrive in South Africa in 2026, with local pricing and specifications set to be announced closer to the official launch.
Said Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager at Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa, “Following the successful introduction of the J7 SHS and Omoda C9 SHS plug-in hybrids, the Jaecoo J5 HEV represents the next step in expanding our electrified offerings. With its blend of hybrid efficiency, smooth performance, and attainable pricing, it brings electrified mobility to a wider audience when it arrives in South Africa next year.”
