The McLaren P1 GTR is a track-only special from McLaren Special Operations, with just 24 produced. A lot of the wealthy owners, however weren’t happy about the fact that they couldn’t use their new cars on the road, so they gave their prized possessions to a company called Lanzante, which converted each GTR into a 735 kW road-legal hypercar.
Following this, McLaren decided to give its blessing to Lanzante to build five of these units in an official limited production run, calling the new model the P1 LM. A sixth example will be labelled the P1 XP1 LM and will make its way up the hill at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
This isn’t the first time that Lanzante has put its mark on a track-specific McLaren, as it provided a similar conversion for five of the Le Mans-winning 1995 McLaren F1 LM models.
The P1 LM retains the twin-turbo 3,8-litre V8 hybrid system, sending 735 kW to the rear wheels. The engine bay, however, is now gold-plated, while the catalytic convertor pipes and exhaust headers make use of a super alloy compound, cutting weight by 4,5 kg. The charge coolers have also been revised to manage the system at a higher run temperature.
Other changes made to the P1 LM include a unique set of road-legal wheels and tyres and the removal of all the race parts, which in turn make it a further 60 kg lighter.
In terms of aerodynamics, the P1 LM receives a modified rear wing and front splitter similar to the one found on the GTR, but 40% more efficient in providing downforce. A carbon-fibre roof has also been added for good measure.
Inside, drivers are greeted by a predominantly carbon-fibre-covered interior, although the seat inserts and door pulls are upholstered in Alcantara. Interestingly, drivers will have the pleasure of controlling the P1 LM with a modified version of the steering wheel found in Lewis Hamilton’s MP4/23 Formula One car.
Additional extras include a full tool kit, a diagnostics tablet, a tailored car cover and battery charging system, a 1:8 scale model and a framed rendering of the car.
