Mazda has just confirmed production of its new MX-5 RF (Retractable Fastback); a mechanical hardtop convertible variant of the world’s favourite roadster. The RF is strictly a cosmetic change and does not provide the MX-5 with any engine based enhancements. Think of this as an MX-5 for those who feel paranoid about canvas top roofs.
Mazda claims this fastback RF to have a driving personality that does not reflect the lightweight sportscar persona experienced in the standard model. It intends to set a fun filled mood for its drivers through a unique open-air experience for a new kind of buyer. The main selling point for this model is that it appeals to those who want to own an open top vehicle that can be used in all weather conditions; something that is possible but not as practical in a soft top roadster.
The roof design is completely new and closely matches the design seen on the Porsche 911 Targa. Through this, the MX-5 is presented with a new silhouette seen in earlier MX-5 Coupe models. Sadly the rear windscreen has not been shifted which means that interior space in the RF remains the same as that found in the roadster, however the packaging has been adjusted so that the roof does not affect the bootspace when retracted.
We don’t have any revealing images of the interior as yet but Mazda claims that it will feature wraparound panels to provide the cabin with more insulation, making the NVH lower for a more comfortable everyday use. In addition to this, the seats also make use of a more premium upholstery by making use of Auburn-coloured Nappa leather detailed with grey stitching.
The MX-5 RF is confirmed for production in both the 1,5-litre and 2,0-litre SkyActiv engines for international markets. There is no word on whether it will arrive on this side of the world but if it does it’s most likely only to be available with the larger powertrain.
