The SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) in Las Vegas (USA) always features some interesting and off-the-wall concepts.
However, sometimes there are official concepts that is so appetising you can only dream that the manufacturer actually puts them into production.
This year Mazda has shown two concepts based on the new Mazda MX-5. Called the Spyder and Speedster, these two versions are even lighter than the standard little roadster.
The Spyder features a “bikini top” and a carbon-fibre aerodynamic kit. The 17-inch Advan Racing RS II wheels cover Brembo 4-piston calipers up front which also includes ventilated discs. There is also new, adjustable coilovers. The result is a weight of only 1 043 kg.
The Speedster, which also features K&W adjustable coilover suspension and the Brembo brake system, ditches any form of weather protection – except for a small wind deflector.
This concept also features carbon-fibre doors and seats and 16-inch Rays 57 Extreme Gram Lights wheels and sits 30 mm closer to the road than the standard car. The overall result of all these weight saving measures is a weight of only 943 kg.
Sadly it is unlikely that any of these concepts will be heading for production.
