Earlier this month Mazda had released a sneak peak of its CX-4; a coupe-like SUV based on the CX-5. Mazda has revealed this concept at the Beijing Auto Show as a production model exclusive to the Chinese market.
The design adopts Mazda’s KODO language and despite being based on the CX-5 it’s much closer to the CX-9 and -3 in terms of lines. It maintains the elongated wheelbase much favoured by the Chinese market as well as a sweeping roofline with blacked out A-, B- and C-pillars to provide it with a sleek coupe silhouette. As a result, the CX-4 adopts an appearance that is unique within the Mazda lineup
Despite having the same wheelbase and ground clearance as the CX-5, this coupe variant has been given an 1 530 mm overall height making it appear longer than its crossover counterparts. The optional 225/55R19 or standard 225/65R17 wheels also provide it with a reasonable ground clearance and SUV capabilities.
Not much is unique within the CX-4 as it adopts the layout found in the CX-5. The seats make use of a vertical double pleat design and bold stitching in the center section which Mazda claims to be somewhat of a homage to the interior designs of a vintage car.
Rear cargo dimensions come in at 1 054 mm long, 500 mm tall and 1 020 mm wide at the liftgate with a claimed capacity of 400-litres. Making use of the 60:40 split on the rear seats this capacity can extend to 1 228-litres.
Engine options consist of the two 2,0- and 2,5-litre Skyactiv petrol engines producing 121 kW and 210 N.m of torque and 141 kW and 256 N.m of torque respectively mated to the six-speed automatic transmission delivering power to the front wheels for the 2,0-litre and all four wheels for the 2,5-litre engine.
Needless to say the CX-4 won’t be coming to South Africa.
