The Mercedes-AMG GT’s final swansong was launched last year in the form of the Black Series, a hardcore, bewinged version of their classically beautiful GT model. Originally envisioned as a competitor to Porsche’s inimitable 911, the GT proved to be a little too wide, a little too low, and just not quite as good at the everyday usability thing that the 911 is so inexplicably brilliant at. It did, however, offer an appeal that the 911 was lacking – perhaps it was its 4,0-litre force-fed V8, or maybe it was its long bonnet and unforgiving nature at the limit. Whatever it was, it was brilliant, and undoubtedly the most emotional of the bunch was the GT C, with its widened track and look-at-me drop-top.
It 435 kW and 700 N.m proved to be ample for the roadster, the twin-turbocharged 4,0-litre V8’s sonorous thrum and burbly overrun even more accessible with the cloth top stowed away. German tuning gurus, Posaidon, however, felt that GT C would be the perfect basis upon which they could build a 650 kW ballistic roadster.
Based in Mülheim-Kärlich, the Posaidon team has developed two completely new, ball-bearing, high-performance turbochargers, forged high-performance pistons, a sports air filter, uprated fuel pumps, and colder burning spark plugs. New manifolds and downpipes with freer-flowing catalytic converters allow for increased flow of exhaust gasses, thus increasing engine performance. And of course, the beauty of well-engineered and uprated engine hardware is that it allows for the safe and reliable tuning of engine software. Mercedes-AMG’s trusty AMG Speedshift seven-speed dual-clutch transmission still does duty here, however, it has had both its software and hardware optimised to cope with the additional torque.
Speaking of torque, the RS 830+ now boasts a whopping 1 000 N.m, however, this figure has been electronically limited so as to increase the drivability of the rear-wheel-drive coupe. Of course, staggering performance figures are a given – 0-100 km/h in 2,9 seconds and a top speed of 360 km/h.
The RS 830+ package is their top-notch offering for the AMG GT C, however, there are other options available for those looking to spend a little less money or benefit from a slight bump in power. These include just the upgraded turbochargers and downpipes for ‘only’ 581 kW and 850 N.m, or just the software upgrades for a ‘modest’ 500 kW and 800 N.m.
