The Mercedes-AMG GT Concept has been officially revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, combining a four-door coupé design with a very powerful petrol-electric powertrain.
This concept essentially previews a production model that is widely expected to be called the Mercedes-AMG GT4 when it arrives next year to rival the Porsche Panamera. Although the production model will likely be based on the aluminium structure underpinning the likes of the E63, the design of the concept comes across as closely related to the GT coupé. New to the exterior are the “nano active fibre technology” daytime running lights, which feature freely styled light cords.
But what you really want to read about is what’s happening under the bonnet, right? Well, powering the GT Concept is the brand’s now-familiar bi-turbo 4,0-litre V8. But in this application, it has been mated to an electric motor, resulting in an overall output of 600 kW and a claimed 0-100 km/h time of less than 3,0 seconds.
Despite the supercar-rivalling performance stats, Mercedes-AMG says this is a car that you could feasibly use on a daily basis. It employs the automaker’s 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system, which includes a torque vectoring function. Interestingly, the GT Concept becomes rear-wheel drive in all-electric mode.
Although the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept is merely a show car, it likely strongly resembles the production model that is expected to go on sale by 2018.
