Following several leaks and teases Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed the next generation E-Class. Don’t feel bad for confusing it with the current C-Class at first glance. In terms of appearance the E-Class fits in between the C and S-Class design cues with very little unique detailing. This will be the tenth generation of the luxury saloon and will feature a few new engines and loads of innovative technology.
Clearly much longer than before, the E-Class has a 2 939 mm wheelbase (65 mm longer than the previous model) with a total length of 4 923 mm. The short overhangs also provide he visual effect of this being a fairly long vehicle. The tailpipes, grille and other chrome trimmings are similar to what you would find on other Benz sedans.
When it comes to the interior we see a slightly similar theme used in the current S-Class. The E-Class dash was revealed not too long ago and as seen here it features the 12,3-inch high resolution screen which joins the virtual dash to the infotainment system. More revolutionary, however are the touch sensitive controls placed on the steering wheel which drivers can use to control the infotainment system.
Ambient lighting now has a variation of 64 different colours rather than the current selection of just three which means adds to the level of customisation drivers can experience in the E-Class’s cabin. The heat-comfort package which warms a few of the interior panels as seen in the S-Class will also be available as an option.
The E-Class will initially be made available with a four-cylinder E200 petrol or a new 143 kW E220d engine with a claimed consumption of 3,9 l/100 km. Later models will receive a E350e plug-in hybrid model with a claimed electrically independent range of 30 km. The E350e will produce a combined power output of 205 kW and 600 N.m of torque.
The top range diesel models will receive a 3,0-litre V6 with an advanced SCR (Selective catalytic reduction) exhaust system delivering 190 kW and 620 N.m of torque.
There will also be an E400 4MATIC For the petrol fans who feel that the AMG variant might be a little too crazy. This E-Class variant will feature a 245 kW 480 N.m turbocharged V6 as seen on the current model. A brand new 110 kW four-cylinder diesel engine will also eventually be available for those wish to follow the hypermile lifestyle. All models will be mated to the nine-speed 9G-Tronic transmission.
Another segment-first is the multi-chamber air suspension which can adapt itself to different situations through the three air chambers placed above each strut and can be controlled via the driver select feature.
The Car-to-X feature gives the new E-Class the ability to interact with other E-Class drivers as it acts as a transmitter and receiver powered by a SIM card. The reasoning behind this is so that should a driver come into contact with hazards such as potholes, obstacles or speed-traps they will be able to alert those close-by. However, Mercedes might want to think about limiting this feature for drivers who suffer with road rage.
Seeing as this is just a reveal there are no hints at pricing or a release date.
