The second-generation Mercedes AMG GT Coupe has been unsheathed and ticks nearly all the enthusiast-pleasing boxes. One last hoorah for the mighty Affalterbach V8?
Mercedes has introduced the latest and greatest iteration of the GT Coupe moniker that stands at the top of the AMG hierarchy.

A long wheelbase (specifically 2 700 mm), short overhangs and steeply raked windscreen are a staple of the AMG GT Coupe’s appearance. Its shapely frame is composed of a lightweight aluminium, steel and magnesium mix. This combination increases rigidity while contributing to its 1 970 kg overall weight.
A key feature of the second-generation AMG GT Coupe is its bolstered aerodynamic capabilities. The underbody of the AMG GT Coupe is an active aero component which is purposed to improve handling and create a Venturi effect helping the car hug the ground and reduce lift on the front axle. Throughout the car’s frame are several active aero elements such as the Airpanel and retractable rear spoiler.

The sultry 2+2 Coupe’s engine bay is home to a 4,0-litre twin-turbocharged V8. The eight-cylinder M177 is mated to AMG’s Speedshift MCT nine-speed automatic transmission. This rendition of the M177 engine features a revised oil pan, a relocated intercooler, an active crankcase ventilation system, optimised inlet and outlet ports, and higher boost pressures. What this translates to is a total output of 430 kW and 800 N.m, – or on par with the highest-strung variant of the first generation AMG GT Coupe, the AMG GT R and AMG GT R Pro. Mercedes claims its capable of a 3,2 second 0 to 100 km/h sprint and a top speed of 315 km/h.
The standard for the second generation model is the firm’s rear-wheel drive steering system, AMG Active Ride Control system with active roll stabilisation, and a rear axle locking differential.
In terms of suspension, Mercedes have endowed the 2024 AMG GT Coupe with a multi-link double-wishbone front axle system. The rear axle features the same aluminium double wishbone system found on the front axle. The majority of the suspension components are composed of forged aluminium.
The interior is no reinvention from what we’ve come to know and expect from modern AMG offerings. An 11,9-inch infotainment screen dominates the dashboard. The car is piloted via a double-spoke AMG performance steering wheel, and the pilot is supported by AMG sports seats with integrated headrests.
As the first taste of the new generation of the automaker’s best modern-day titles, the bar has been raised and fortunately with the mighty Affalterbach V8 too!
