Mil-Spec Automotive, an expert in road-going Hummer H1 conversions, has taken the covers of a special-edition build that has been made with summer travel in mind. The restomod consists of a number of refinements to the powertrain, suspension and styling.
The H1 has been fitted with turbodiesel 6,6-litre V8 Duramax engine connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine has been modified to deliver 373 kW and 1 356 N.m of torque, and to handle that immense twisting force, a special heavy-duty drivetrain configuration which includes redesigned front and rear drive shafts, carrier bearings, motor mounts and transmission crossmember, has been installed. To increase range, the H1 adopts a 113,5-litre fuel tank that sits alongside a fully integrated steel skid plate.
The exclusive Baja suspension package doubles wheel travel to 330 mm which should make this capable of hitting high speeds off-road without breaking a sweat. Among this, longer coil springs and remote-reservoir shocks, stronger front and rear billet balljoints, an upgraded sway bar designed for long travel and 20-inch Toyo Open Country M/T tyres have been added to improve capabilities off-road. Improving on the stopping power is a set of Wilwood six-piston high-performance brakes.
Visually, the H1 sets itself apart with an exclusive four-door hardtop configuration finished in a blacked-out onyx paint scheme. A Deep Sky Black Kevlar-infused polyurethane exterior coating is joined by semi-gloss black powdercoated accents to complete the dark image.
The exterior has also been kitted out with a ceramic underbody and engine bay coating for improved insulation and thermal protection. Furthermore, a set of heavy-duty rocker panel protection skid plates has been added to the H1’s T6 hardened aerospace-grade aluminium body. A bumper tow package with an integrated two-inch ball hitch, electrical plugs and a reverse camera to assist with trailer alignment and hook-up for hauling further improves convenience.
Refinements to the cabin come courtesy of Formawerx, which has provided a custom-machined steering wheel and an executive interior package that features onyx-coloured Nappa leather featuring distinctive quilted stitching, and custom lumbar supports.
Other added bits include a custom-designed gauge layout with anodised black bezels and imperial measurements. The doors include specially designed billet aluminum pulls finished in black powder-coat. For sound and entertainment, a premium JL Audio sound system has been fitted.
Mil-Spec Automotive is now accepting orders for the custom H1, with prices starting at $300 000 (approximately R5,1 million).
