The new BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupé is expected to launch in South Africa towards the end of the first quarter of 2020 but we already have local pricing.
Interestingly, as is the case with the M850i variants, the Dingolfing-built four-door M8 Competition Gran Coupé is slightly less expensive than its two-door counterpart. The newcomer starts at R2 893 400, which is some R49 600 lower than the price of the M8 Competition Coupé.
As a reminder, the Competition version of the four-door performance saloon (the “standard” M8 Gran Coupé won’t be part of the local range) is powered by the Bavarian automaker’s 4,4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine which produces 460 kW and 750 N.m. This is enough, BMW claims, to launch the M8 Competition Gran Coupé to 100 km/h from standstill in 3,2 seconds.
Power is sent to all four corners via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. Like its two-door M8 Coupé stablemate, the Gran Coupé is equipped with BMW’s rear-wheel-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive setup.
The local 8 Series Gran Coupé range also includes the rear-driven 840i, the 840d xDrive and the M850i xDrive. How does this Gran Coupé differ from the two-door (besides gaining a pair of extra portals)? Well, the wheelbase is some 201 mm longer than that of the coupé, while the rear bench comprises outer pews “styled as individual seats with integral head restraints” and a third middle seat “suitable for use on short journeys”.
