Honda has revealed its new City hatchback in Thailand, effectively lopping the rear end off the latest version of the sedan we know here in South Africa as the Ballade.

In Thailand, the newcomer replaces the Jazz and is offered with the same turbocharged 1,0-litre, three-cylinder VTEC unit that debuted overseas in the sedan, sending the front wheels some 90 kW and 173 N.m. Gearbox options include a six-speed manual cog-swapper and a continuously variable transmission.

Just as with the sedan, a RS-badged flagship model is available in Thailand, with the upgrades on this variant again purely cosmetic. Inside, you’ll find the Japanese firm’s eight-inch touchscreen, complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, plus six airbags and a fresh version of Honda's so-called Magic Seat system.

So, will we see the new five-door hatchback on local roads? Well, Honda Southern Africa confirmed to CARmag.co.za it “will not be launching the new City hatch in South Africa”, but added it will be introducing “a new product in 2021 which is planned to fill this gap”.
