Land Rover South Africa has quietly revealed pricing for as many as 30 of the 38 derivatives expected to make up the new Defender range later in 2020.
Last we heard, the four-door Defender 110 variants were scheduled to hit South Africa in June 2020, while the two-door Defender 90 derivatives were pencilled in for an arrival at some point in the second half of the year.
So, what sort of cash are we looking here? Well, the Whitley-based firm’s local arm has yet to reveal pricing for the eight entry-level D200 variants (each using a 2,0-litre turbodiesel with 147 kW and 430 N.m), so we don’t yet know exactly where the range will kick off (although Land Rover SA’s earlier indicative pricing suggested the 90 would start at R830 300 and the 110 at R910 400).
[UPDATE: CARmag.co.za has learnt the D200 variants are no longer on the cards for South Africa, suggesting the local range will in fact start with the D240 models and comprise the below 30 variants]
We have, however, unearthed pricing for the D240, P300 and P400 derivatives (check out the full list below, which runs from R948 000 to R1 498 400, before CO2 emissions taxes and the fitment of any of the multitude of accessory packs and options), with trim levels including base, S, SE, HSE and X, along with a fistful of First Edition models. All examples feature all-wheel drive and eight-speed automatic transmissions as standard.
As a reminder, the D240 variants each employ a 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine sending 177 kW and 430 N.m to all four corners, while the P300 derivatives each make use of a turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol unit offering 221 kW and 400 N.m.
Flagship P400 models, meanwhile, are each powered by a 3,0-litre straight-six featuring a turbocharger, a 48 V electric supercharger and a mild-hybrid arrangement resulting in healthy peak outputs of 294 kW and 550 N.m. That’s enough, says Land Rover, for a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in just 6,0 seconds in the case of the Defender 90 (and one-tenth slower for the four-door version).
