Lexus South Africa has confirmed its new LC500 Convertible will hit local roads in 2021.
Revealed in November 2019, the soft-top version of the Toyota-backed brand’s flagship coupé is described as an “aspirational halo model”.
Like the coupé variant already offered in SA, the LC500 Convertible will ship standard with a naturally aspirated 5,0-litre V8 engine sending 351 kW and 540 N.m to the rear axle via a ten-speed automatic transmission.
While local pricing has yet to be announced, we expect the open-top model to command a bit of a price premium over the R2 031 200 coupé.
Measuring 4 760 mm long, 1 920 mm wide and 1 350 mm tall, the LC500 Convertible shares its 2 870 mm wheelbase with the aforementioned coupé. The four-layer soft top is fashioned from fabric that Lexus promises won’t wrinkle, while also offering impressive sound insulation. The roof can be opened (in 15 seconds) or closed (in 16 seconds) at speeds up to 50 km/h.
The automatic folding mechanism neatly stores the top under an integrated tonneau cover, while neck heaters and a transparent wind deflector are included in the cabin. The hood is expected to be offered in a choice of two hues.
Lexus claims the “strategic placement” and shape of the rear suspension tower brace means the vehicle’s structural rigidity has been “significantly enhanced”. Other braces, meanwhile, are employed under the body.
