The all-new Mercedes-AMG SL has been unveiled as an official replacement of the previous generation model and GT offering. The badge has officially been placed under the firm’s performance brand and will be built as a 2+2 soft-top roadster exclusively.
With this generation of the Mercedes-AMG SL, the manufacturer wants the icon to return to the roots of the W198 but to keep things modern it will be offered with all-wheel drive, an all-new suspension and a number of modern touches both inside and out.
The Mercedes-AMG SL will be available with two powertrain options. The entry-level SL55 will adopt the twin-turbocharged 4,0-litre V8 with a power output of 350 kW and 700 N.m of torque which gives it a 0-100 km/h time of 3,9 seconds and a top speed of 295 km/h. The flagship SL63 offers 430 kW and 800 N.m of torque with a 0-100 km/h time of 3,6 seconds and a top speed of 315 km/h. The performance arm will soon reveal an E Performance variant which will produce more power with the aid of electrification.
The Mercedes-AMG SL will transmit power to all four wheels via a Speedshift MCT 9G transmission that makes use of the wet start-up clutch. This replaces the torque converter system and as per the brand’s claims, reduces mass and provides improved responsiveness due to its lower inertia.
Using a variation of the now discontinued Mercedes-AMG GT’s chassis, the all-new Mercedes-AMG SL boasts a front and rear five-link suspension that is supported by AMG’s active ride control with hydraulic anti-roll stabilization. This replaces the mechanical anti-roll bars to keep the ride balanced without compromising comfort.
For stopping power, the 2+2 adopts a set of composite brake discs that are lighter and smaller in volume. They also boast improved cooling characteristics and provide better pad cleaning after braking events. The entire chassis is supported by an active rear-axle steering system.
