By: CAR magazine

Mercedes-Benz South Africa has released pricing for the initial derivatives in its new S-Class range ahead of the flagship luxury sedan’s local arrival later in 2021.

Revealed in September 2020, the new S-Class will again be offered exclusively in long-wheelbase (V223) form here in South Africa.

At launch, the Stuttgart-based firm’s flagship saloon will be available in both petrol and diesel flavours. Thanks to our eagle-eyed colleagues over at duoporta.com, we know the S500 4Matic will start at R2 428 840, while the S400d 4Matic will kick off at R2 413 360.

Both employ turbocharged 3,0-litre inline six-cylinder engines, with the petrol unit generating 320 kW and 520 N.m, and the oil-burner churning out 243 kW and 700 N.m. All-wheel drive and the firm’s nine-speed automatic transmission ship standard in both cases.

The standard equipment list furthermore includes items such as climatised front seats, a panoramic glass sunroof, multi-beam LED headlamps, wireless smartphone charging, the second-generation MBUX infotainment system, a head-up display, MBUX augmented reality for the navigation and a raft of driver assistance features.

Upgrading to the AMG Line kit will add some R76 700 to the price, while the “Exclusive” package (one of many and comprising Nappa leather, illuminated door sills and extra chrome bits) will cost you an additional R112 700.

There’s also a wide range standalone options on offer, from a Burmester 4D surround sound system (R148 900) and folding tables in the rear (R38 100) to larger alloy wheels (up to 21 inches) and run-flat tyres (R8 500).

In South Africa, the new S-Class will be available in ten standard (flat and metallic) colours, along with a special “designo” Diamond White Bright hue (which costs R29 700 extra).

As a reminder, the new long-wheelbase S-Class measures 5 289 mm from nose to tail (up 34 mm), with its wheelbase growing 51 mm to 3 165 mm. Luggage space is a claimed 550 litres.
