Mitsubishi has announced the new Pajero has seen strong demand in its domestic region ahead of its global launch.

Mitsubishi has announced the new Pajero will go on sale in Japan on 17 December 2026, with international markets following over the coming 12 months. The fifth generation will launch in South Africa by the end of 2027. Pre-orders in its home market opened on 1 October. As of 2 November, approximately 5 500 units have been pre-ordered. According to the company, the initial response surpassed its 2026 fiscal year tales target.
Keisuke Kishiura, President and Chief Operating Officer at Mitsubishi Motors, noted the new model symbolises the brand and plays a key role in driving growth. Following positive feedback in Thailand, where it launched in mid-October, bringing the SUV to Japan supports the automaker’s ongoing momentum. In Japan, the Pajero will be available in four trims: Super Exceed, Exceed, GSR, and GLS.

How Mitsubishi returns to its off-road roots with the new Pajero
The new Pajero employs Mitsubishi’s (4N16) 2.4-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine. The intercooled single-turbo unit produces 150 kW at 3 500 r/min and 480 N.m of torque between 1 750 and 2 500 r/min. An eight-speed automatic transmission manages power delivery. High-spec models feature the firm’s Super Select 4WD-II four-wheel-drive system, complete with low range and a centre differential lock. Seven terrain modes are available. The base system operates on Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) dynamic management, an active limited-slip differential, and a rear differential lock to optimise traction across various conditions.
The front suspension sits on an independent double-wishbone setup equipped with coil springs and a stabiliser bar. The rear configuration comprises a newly developed five-link rigid axle system with torque arms, coil springs, and a stabiliser bar. Ventilated disc brakes at the front and solid disc brakes at the rear manage stopping duties. The chassis offers 230 mm of ground clearance, an approach angle of 30.4 degrees, a breakover angle of 22.6 degrees, and a departure angle of 25.8 degrees.
