Ford claims the new Mustang Shelby GT500 – billed as the most powerful street-legal model ever offered by the Blue Oval brand and revealed back in January 2019 – will deliver “supercar levels of performance”.
With 567 kW and 847 N.m from its supercharged 5,2-litre V8 engine, Ford says the Shelby GT500 is capable of going from standstill to 100 mph (161 km/h) and back to zero in 10,6 seconds. Of course, the 16,5-inch brakes and optional carbon-fibre wheels (wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres) also help here.
The Mustang Shelby GT500 employs a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, with Ford Performance engineers collaborating with Tremec to design the gearbox.
Dubbed the TR-9070 DCT, the transmission features a wet clutch system with five friction plates in the odd-gear pack (the even-gear pack includes six friction plates). Ford says transmission fluid is applied to the clutch surfaces only during thermal events for optimal cooling and minimal parasitic loss.
Power output is transmitted to the 3,73:1 Torsen limited-slip independent rear suspension via a carbon-fibre driveshaft for reduced rotational mass and torsional distortion, plus larger halfshafts and a redesigned rear suspension hub for added strength.
