Nissan has taken the wraps off its new Magnite concept in India, billing the show car as a preview of its “highly anticipated” baby crossover.
Set to be manufactured in India, the production version will be exported to markets in Africa and the Middle East. It will measure less than four metres in length.
While Nissan South Africa has yet to confirm whether the Magnite will make it to local shores, marketing director Kabelo Rabotho recently told CARmag.co.za the brand was “looking at introducing two vehicles in the lower end or what we call the B-segment”.
We’d speculate the Magnite would be one of them (the second perhaps being the Kicks, with the latest Juke seemingly less likely to make the cut), positioned to take on the likes of the Hyundai Venue and upcoming Kia Sonet, and perhaps even the slightly larger Ford EcoSport and Volkswagen T-Cross.
Nissan says the new Magnite’s name is a portmanteau of the words "magnetic" and "ignite".
"The Nissan Magnite is an evolutionary leap in Nissan's global SUV DNA," said Rakesh Srivastava, managing director at Nissan Motor India.
"With cutting-edge technology on board, it will be a game-changer in its segment. A bold offering in the sub-four-metre category, we are confident that Nissan Magnite will redefine the B-SUV segment for the industry.
“The Nissan Magnite is made on the philosophy of 'Make in India, Make for the World' and has been designed in Japan while keeping in mind the requirements and aspirations of Indian customers," said Srivastava.
