New Nissan Sylphy unveiled … previewing next Sentra?

By: CAR magazine

Nissan has revealed its new Sylphy at Auto Shanghai 2019, effectively previewing the next-generation Sentra sedan.

While the Japanese automaker’s press material is fairly light on technical details, it does reveal the new model employs a “more fuel-efficient” powertrain comprising an “all-new HR16DE Gen3 intelligent drive engine” and a continuously variable transmission. From what we understand, that’s an evolution of the brand’s 1,6-litre, four-cylinder petrol unit.

The Sylphy also gains a wider stance, a lower centre of gravity, improved aerodynamics (it boasts a drag coefficient of 0,26) and what the firm describes as a “roomy, luxurious interior”. Steering, suspension and body rigidity have also been “enhanced”, says Nissan.

The new model features a black grille complete with the automaker’s signature “V-motion” design. Inside, you’ll find three-zone air-conditioning, an eight-inch colour display and a seven-inch TFT monitor.

Driver assistance features on the new Sylphy include intelligent forward collision warning, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, cross traffic alert and intelligent driving alert.

In May 2017, the Sentra quietly left South Africa’s new vehicle market. Whether the upcoming version previewed by this Sylphy will be considered for a local introduction remains to be seen…
