The new Renault Captur has been unveiled, with the second-generation model featuring fresh (yet somewhat familiar) styling, new technology and what the French firm describes as “a more practical interior”.
Renault South Africa told CARmag.co.za it was planning a local launch of the new Captur in the second half of 2020.
The newcomer runs on the latest CMF-B platform (which also underpins the new Clio) and has grown in length by a full 110 mm (to 4 228 mm).
Inside, you’ll likely notice the new Captur borrows much from the latest Clio, including the so-called “Smart Cockpit” layout (complete with an optional 9,3-inch infotainment screen and a TFT digital display offered with a diameter of either seven or ten inches) that debuted on the hatchback.
Furthermore, the Boulogne-Billancourt-based automaker claims the interior quality will rival models “from the class above”. The steering wheel has also been slimmed down thanks to the use of a more compact airbag. New front seats bearing bases that are 15 mm longer and boasting a “more enveloping shape” have been adopted, while rear legroom has improved by a claimed 17 mm.
Luggage capacity, meanwhile, has been increased by 81 litres, with 536 litres on offer with the rear bench dropped flat. The aforementioned bench is again of the sliding variety, offering 160 mm of movement to maximise either passenger- or boot-space.
While local engine specifications have yet to be confirmed, Renault in Europe says the Captur will be offered with a “wider range of redesigned petrol and diesel engines”, plus the addition of a plug-in hybrid model for some markets (the latter from 2020).
Petrol engines will include a turbocharged 1,0-litre, three-cylinder unit offering 74 kW and 160 N.m, as well as a 1,3-litre powerplant generating 96 kW and 240 N.m in lower-spec models and 114 kW and 270 N.m in flagship variants. Transmission options, meanwhile, will comprise a six-speed manual cog-swapper and a new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
And diesel power? Well, Renault says it has updated its 1,5-litre dCi engine, which will be offered in 70 kW/240 N.m guise (with a six-speed manual) and 85 kW/260 N.m form (with the option of the seven-speed dual-clutch unit).
