New Subaru Outback: sixth-gen brings back turbo power…

Subaru has whipped the covers off its new Outback at the New York International Auto Show, with the sixth-generation model being offered with a turbocharged engine.

Running on the latest Subaru Global Platform, the new Outback will ship standard with the Japanese firm’s signature symmetrical all-wheel-drive system and a ground clearance of 220 mm. For the record, the newcomer measures 4 860 mm long, 1 855 mm wide and 1 680 mm tall.

The big news, however, is the option (for North America, at least) of turbo power in an Outback for the first time since 2009. Yes, the new model will be offered with a turbocharged 2,4-litre flat-four engine worth 191 kW and 375 N.m.

In addition, an updated version of the firm’s naturally aspirated 2,5-litre flat-four unit will be available, delivering 134 kW and 239 N.m. All Outback models will feature the automaker’s “Lineartronic” continuously variable transmission (with an eight-step mode and paddle shifters) as standard (so, no manual gearboxes here, then).

Subaru says the “all-new” suspension arrangement is “lighter and more responsive”, with the MacPherson struts up front gaining new internal rebound springs, aluminium lower “L-arms” and a new 23 mm hollow stabiliser bar. The rear suspension comprises a double-wishbone layout with subframe, coil springs and a redesigned 19 mm hollow stabiliser bar.

Of course, Subaru will also offer its EyeSight driver assist technology, which now includes advanced adaptive cruise control with a lane-centring function. Additional driver-assist technologies include LED steering responsive headlamps, reverse automatic braking, blind spot detection (with lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert) and a head-up display.

Inside, Subaru claims the new Outback is far more refined than its predecessor at speed. A set of ten-way power adjustable front seats will be available, along with up to four USB ports and two 12-volt power sockets. The facia is dominated by a new, tablet-style 11,6-inch display, which the firm bills as “the largest, most advanced infotainment screen ever in a Subaru”.
