New Tata Safari revealed … and it’s a Discovery Sport underneath!

The new Tata Safari seven-seater SUV has been revealed, with the Indian firm basing the newcomer on the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Of course, Jaguar Land Rover has been a subsidiary of Tata Motors since 2008, which explains the component sharing.

Riding on an architecture “derived from the renowned D8 platform from Land Rover”, the new Safari arrives as a three-row option, just like the aforementioned Discovery Sport.

It will be built in Pune and is described as the brand’s “flagship offering”, slotting in above the Harrier. It is the second generation of the Safari nameplate, with the first having arrived back in 1998.

From what we understand, the Safari will debut with a 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine offering around 125 kW, delivered via either a six-speed manual gearbox or a torque-converter automatic transmission with the same number of cogs.

However, Tata says the platform “allows for further drivetrain enhancements including all-wheel drive and possibilities of electrification in future”.

Inside, Tata says the Safari is “plush” and distinctly “premium”, offered with an Oyster White theme and an Ash Wood dashboard.
