Toyota South Africa has confirmed the next Hilux GR-Sport will make its debut in 2027. But what can we expect from the new pinnacle model?

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has confirmed to CAR magazine that the new Hilux GR-Sport (GR-S) will make local landfall in 2027. While details remain thin on the ground, the next Hilux GR-S, seen here as a render by digital artist Theottle, will likely follow a similar formula as its predecessor — more imposing front grille, widebody kit wrapping around wider front and rear tracks, upgraded suspension, and bespoke design elements. The latter includes GR exterior decals, ‘GR’ branding inside and out, and red contrast stitching in the cabin, to name but a few items.
Details surrounding the apex Hilux’s powertrain also remain under wraps. However, it seems likely that, similar to its predecessor, the new GR-S could employ an uprated version of the Japanese automaker’s tried-and-tested 2.8GD-6 engine…perhaps this time in 48 V mild-hybrid format?
As a reminder, the 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel unit carried over from the eighth generation produces 150 kW and 500 N.m of torque — the latter available from a low 1 600 r/min. In the previous Hilux GR-S, which we evaluated for a road test in the August 2024 issue of CAR magazine, the 2.8GD-6 was tuned to produce 165 kW and 550 N.m, delivered to the road via a part-time four-wheel drivetrain paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
It seems fair to say that the ninth generation-based GR-S will — similar to higher-tier models such as the Legend, which we’ve sampled in Namibia and tested in the September 2026 issue of CAR magazine — adopt electric power steering. But could the next Hilux GR-S also gain additional mechanical enhancements? Time will tell…
The Hilux continues to lead local sales charts, not only maintaining top spot among the best-selling bakkies in South Africa but remains the best-selling vehicle overall. The local ninth-generation Hilux lineup currently comprises single-cab, Xtra Cab, and double-cab body styles; all featuring the 2.8GD-6 engine in either “standard” or 48 V mild-hybrid format, a six-speed self-shifter, and the choice of either 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrains. Toyota’s local arm has confirmed 2.4GD-6 engine will be introduced to the range in the first quarter of 2027.
