Volkswagen South Africa has added a new 1,0 TSI derivative to its popular local Polo hatchback range, kitting out the little hatchback with an R-Line styling package as standard.
The price? R290 200, which includes a three-year or 45 000 km service plan.
The 1,0-litre turbo-triple makes 81 kW and 200 N.m, with the latter on tap from 2 000 to 3 500 r/min. VW claims that this is enough for a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in 9,3 seconds and a top speed of 197 km/h.
Perhaps more importantly, however, the new mill – which is mated to a seven-speed DSG transmission as standard – boasts a claimed combined fuel consumption figure of 4,4 L/100 km, thanks to the Wolfsburg brand’s BlueMotion technology with stop/start.
Interestingly, this three-cylinder engine will also serve as the base mill in the updated Golf range that is scheduled to be launched locally at the end of the second quarter.
So, what does the R-Line package add? Well, it includes sportier front and rear bumpers, side sill extensions, a faux-diffuser (with an integrated chrome tailpipe), a rear spoiler, 17-inch “Serron” alloys and a cheeky “R-Line” logo on the front grille.
