The Ford Mustang Mach 1 limited edition has landed in South Africa, sporting a number of unique dynamic and aerodynamic features as well as a small performance upgrade. Said to be the most track-focused Mustang to date, the Mach 1 is priced at R1 182 100 in manual transmission guise and R1 203 800 as an auto. This represents a premium of R159 600 over the equivalent 5,0 GT auto model.
What do Mustang fans get for this money? For starters, the 5,0-litre normally aspirated V8 engine has been modified to produce 338 kW at 7 250 r/min and 529 N.m at 4 900 r/min, which is a 7 kW gain over the regular GT and a match for the Bullitt edition that was available previously. Ford claims a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 4,4 seconds for the Mach 1 auto model and 4,8 seconds for the manual, although the lack of a blower means these numbers are only attainable at sea level.
Unlike the 5,0 GT, which is now only sold with an automatic gearbox, Mustang Mach 1 buyers get to choose between manual and automatic transmissions. The manual gearbox is derived from the Shelby GT350 and features rev-matching technology and a “robust” twin-disc clutch. The auto model uses Ford’s 10-speed self-shifter, but features an upgraded torque converter and model-specific calibration.
Also unique to the Mustang Mach 1 is an aerodynamic package that includes a single-deck rear spoiler and bespoke rear diffuser, which work together to improve downforce, while the front end sports new two-piece upper and lower side grilles that are said to improve cooling.
A fair amount of attention has been given to the chassis too, including uniquely tuned, and stiffer, front springs and anti-roll bars, and Ford’s electronically controlled MagneRide 2 adjustable suspension system is also part of the deal here. Further aiding its on-track performance is a set of 18-inch alloy wheels, which are 0,5 inches wider at the rear, and rubbered up with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres.
Mustang Mach 1 customers can also look forward to a track-focused selectable driving mode as well as a set of ‘Track Apps’ that allow them to record performance data and view it via the 12-inch digital instrument cluster, which is fitted as standard.
Cabin decor comes in the form of a Mach 1 dashboard badge and build number, and heated and cooled leather sports seats with Metal Grey stitching. Creature comforts include a 10-speaker B&O sound system and a Sync 3 infotainment system. After sales back-up comprises a six-year or 90 000 km service plan and a warranty that’s valid for four years or 120 000 km.
