The budget SUV segment is looking set for explosive growth this year with the release of new contenders like the Nissan Magnite as well as the Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Toyota Urban Cruiser twins, and now the Kia Sonet is entering the fighting ring.
Kia South Africa has announced pricing for its new Indian-built Sonet, which is on sale now. The range kicks off with the 1.5 LX model, which costs R264 995 in manual form and R285 995 when paired with a CVT transmission. The more luxurious EX starts at R284 000, rising to R305 995 if you’re going the CVT route.
By comparison, the Suzuki Vitara Brezza is priced between R244 900 and R309 900, with its Toyota sibling commanding a small premium over that, and the Nissan Magnite starts at R256 999 and tops out at the R305 700 mark.
All Kia Sonet derivatives are powered by a 1.5-litre normally aspirated petrol engine that produces 85 kW and 144 N.m, and the engine can be paired with either a five-speed manual or CVT continuously variable transmission.
A walk through the grades
As mentioned, buyers get to choose between LX and EX grades.
The base LX comes with 15-inch steel wheels, an eight-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a reverse camera, electric windows and mirrors, dual front airbags and ESC.
The EX adds 16-inch alloy wheels to the mix, along with roof rails, silver skid plates and front fog lights. The flagship also gains rear park-distance control and a leather-covered steering wheel.
All Kia Sonet variants are sold with a four-year / 60 000 km service plan and a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty.
