Interestingly, the Cabriolet body style is now offered in S5 guise only. Last we heard, the updated RS5 Coupé and RS5 Sportback were expected to hit local roads in the first quarter of 2021.
As we pointed out earlier, the refreshed line-up kicks off with the A5 40 TFSI Coupé, which starts at R751 000. This variant’s turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine offers the front axle 140 kW and 320 N.m, which is enough for a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 7,3 seconds. This powertrain is also offered in S line guise, priced from R796 000 in Coupé form and R811 000 in Sportback guise. The latter, five-door version takes an extra two-tenths of a second to hit three figures compared with the three-door model.
The A5 40 TDI Quattro powertrain is available in both Coupé (from R836 000) and Sportback (starting at R851 000) form. The 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel unit generates 140 kW and 400 N.m, driving all four wheels via the same seven-speed dual-clutch transmission employed across the A5 line-up.
And the S5 range? Well, here the turbocharged 3,0-litre V6 petrol engine delivers an unchanged 260 kW and 500 N.m to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission. In the S5 Coupé, which is priced from R1 052 000, that’s enough for a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 4,7 seconds.
The S5 Sportback takes one-tenth longer to reach three figures, with prices starting at R1 067 000. Finally, the S5 Cabriolet (kicking off at R1 152 000) takes a claimed 4,9 seconds to hit 100 km/h, with all three variants topping out at an electronically limited 250 km/h.
So, what else is new? Well, all variants across the A5 and S5 range gains the Ingolstadt-based firm’s “fully integrated connectivity functions” with Audi connect. All derivatives furthermore ship standard with Matrix LED headlamps and LED taillamps featuring dynamic indicators.
The standard A5 features 17-inch alloy wheels, a matte-black grille with a chrome frame and aluminium silver-matte tailpipe trim. S line models upgrade to 18-inch alloys, widened side skirts, sports suspension, a model-specific grille in titanium black and a model-specific rear diffuser. Finally, S5 derivatives feature 19-inch grey wheels (framing red brake callipers), aluminium-look side-mirror caps, a larger rear spoiler, S-specific bumpers and S sports suspension.
Inside, Audi has added a new 10,1-inch touchscreen with acoustic feedback, ditching the rotary pushbutton system. A5 models come standard with Audi’s smartphone interface, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, as well as the 12,3-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus instrument cluster.
Various optional packages are offered locally, including Technology (which adds MMI navigation plus with MMI touch, contour ambient lighting and unleashes Audi connect’s full functionality), Comfort (bringing electric seats up front, seat heaters, a reversing camera and a storage solution) and Sport (including a flat-bottomed steering wheel with shift paddles and sport seats).
