Ferrari has revealed a thoroughly updated Portofino M, which arrives three years after the original as a mid-cycle refresh.
The adoption of the “M” suffix (which stands for “modificata”, meaning "modified") brings both a new, eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (replacing the previous seven-speed unit) and more oomph from the turbocharged 3,9-litre V8 engine.
In the refreshed retractable hard-top model, V8 now makes 456 kW (from 5 750 to 7 500 r/min), up from the original model’s maximum power of 441 kW. Peak torque of 760 N.m is unchanged, on tap from 3 000 to 5 750 r/min.
As a result, the obligatory sprint from standstill to 100 km/h takes a claimed 3,45 seconds, marginally quicker than the outgoing Portofino’s time of 3,5 seconds. However, Ferrari says the 0-200 km/h time has fallen a full second, from a claimed 10,8 seconds to 9,8 seconds. Top speed is again in excess of 320 km/h.
Ferrari says its engineers used new cam profiles to increase valve lift and optimise combustion chamber filling. In addition, a speed sensor was added to the turbocharger assembly to measure the turbine revolutions, allowing the maximum revolutions per minute of the turbine to be increased by 5 000 r/min.
According to the Maranello-based firm, the five-position drive-mode selector has gained a “Race” mode, a first for a GT spider from the Prancing Horse company. In addition, the Portofino M gains new exhaust line geometry, with the two rear silencers having been eliminated (to mitigate the soundtrack-sapping effects of the petrol particulate filter now fitted for Europe).
Deliveries in initial markets is set to start in the second quarter of 2021.
