The refreshed Opel Astra has quietly arrived in South Africa in “Edition” form, though the pre-facelift variants look set to soldier on for now.
Priced from R423 000, the Astra 1,4T Edition slots neatly into the middle of Opel SA’s now-five-strong Astra line-up.
While the updated Astra revealed in July 2019 switched to PSA Group powertrains for Europe, this SA-spec model sticks with the Rüsselsheim-based firm’s familiar turbocharged 1,4-litre, four-cylinder petrol mill, sending its 110 kW and 245 N.m to the front axle via a six-speed automatic transmission.
Opel South Africa says it has introduced the Astra 1,4T Edition as a “further derivative” that “boasts subtle differences” to the current versions. Changes include a new front bumper, a revised grille, fresh foglamps and chrome-effect bars extending from the centrally sited logo into the (now-LED rather than halogen) headlamps.
Interestingly, the Astra 1,4T Edition furthermore upgrades to a five-year/150 000 km warranty and a service plan of the same length, compared with the pre-facelift variants’ three-year/120 000 km warranty and five-year/90 000 km service plan.
While the Astra 1,4T Enjoy AT (R426 000) rides on 17-inch alloys as standard, the newcomer comes with 16-inch items. However, it gains automatic headlamps and parking sensors, fore and aft.
