Refreshed Volkswagen California camper van fully revealed!

In July 2019, Volkswagen revealed official sketches of its updated California. Now the Wolfsburg-based firm has fully revealed its new camper van.

Set to make its world première at the end of August at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, VW says its California has received a “technically and visually comprehensive update”. The model pictured here is the flagship California Ocean, complete with a chrome-effect grille that forms a single unit with new LED daytime running lights. A chrome-effect strip also adorns the new bumper.

The Ocean model furthermore boasts what VW calls a “compact set of kitchen units” enhanced and equipped with new details, such as an additional double USB socket. The shutters in the rear cupboard, meanwhile, have been replaced by newly designed sliding doors.

The beds, says VW, provide even “greater comfort”, with the uppermost unit equipped with a sprung base. The double rear bench seat folds down to create a bed can also be transformed into a lounge.

There’s also a newly developed control panel in the overhead console, featuring a large colour touchscreen with “considerably more functions”. VW says all sorts of information can be accessed via the control panel and numerous features controlled. Up front, the instruments are optionally digital, while the infotainment range has also been reconfigured.

As we’ve pointed out before, Volkswagen’s T6 range has switched from hydraulic to electro-mechanical power steering, and that means numerous new driver assistance systems are possible. The extended range of systems includes lane assist, park assist, a side protection function and trailer assist.

The refreshed California, which will be offered in both front- and all-wheel drive, will launch in Europe powered by 2,0-litre turbodiesel engines in various states of tune.
