Shelby unwraps supercharged (615 kW!) Signature Series Mustang…

By: CAR magazine

Shelby has whipped the wraps off its limited-edition Carroll Shelby Signature Series Mustang, saying it’s the “most polished” performance car in the American brand’s 17-year history.

Based on the top-tier Ford Mustang 5,0 V8 (in either fastback or convertible guise), the limited-edition model employs the firm’s familiar 5,0-litre V8 mill, supercharged to send a whopping 615 kW to the rear axle via either a six-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic transmission. A high-flow exhaust system adds aural drama to Signature Series package. Further mechanical upgrades include Shelby-tuned suspension and a fresh set of Brembo brakes. The 20-inch alloys, meanwhile, are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.

According to the California-based company, the Signature Series Mustang was developed over two years, carefully engineered and refined to build a sportscar worthy of its founder’s name. The firm worked closely with Ford Performance and other partners on the project.

“The limited-edition 2020 Carroll Shelby Signature Series Mustang is the ultimate combination of exceptional design and amazing brawn,” said Gary Patterson, president of Shelby American.

The front facia and vented bonnet have been sculpted specifically to decrease air pressure and temperatures in the engine bay, while the bodywork has been widened with aluminium to create a squared-off stance. A diffuser and boot-mounted spoiler have been fitted at the rear.

Inside, the Signature Series Mustang is trimmed in suede and leather, the latter featuring a bespoke snake-skin pattern. Carroll Shelby’s signature has been embroidered onto the seatbacks, too.

A total of 50 limited-edition Carroll Shelby Signature Series Mustangs will be made, with prices starting at $127 795 (that’s nearly R2-million in local money).
