The folks over at RGMotorsport in Gauteng have taken the wraps off a tuned Ford Mustang apparently packing a monstrous 945 kW and 1 100 N.m.
Yes, the Randburg-based tuner has strapped a massive supercharger to the Blue Oval brand’s V8 petrol engine (which in stock, naturally aspirated form generates 306 kW and 530 N.m) to dramatically hike its peak outputs.
Crazy numbers, right? Well, RGM says there’s more to come, with the engine still being run in and a plan to add nitrous oxide injection...
So, what else did the tuner do to the engine? Well, RGM added a Boundary Racing oil pump, stroker crankshaft with an ATI damper pulley, Eagle conrods, Cometic head gaskets, PAC valve springs, Ferrea valves and Comp Cams camshafts. ARP fasteners were used throughout and the resleeved block was topped by gas-flowed heads and finished off with custom valve covers.
Perched above it all, of course, is a Whipple positive displacement blower with Stage 3 competition kit, driven from the crankshaft by a heavy-duty belt. The blower itself is rated at 2,9 litres, forcing compressed air through an integrated intercooler. RGM says maximum boost is “currently” 1,25 bar and the static compression ratio 9,8:1.
The standard engine management system has been supplanted by a Lund Racing map, which the firm says was “created specifically for this car and optimised by RGM”. It actually features two maps: one for normal pump fuel and another for a 95 percent ethanol mix (for, as the firm puts it, “when the dragstrip beckons”). There’s also water-methanol injection and a 76 mm Techniflow exhaust system complete with ceramic-coated manifolds.
RGM says while the six-speed automatic transmission is “stock”, it benefits from the “substitution of various key items”. For instance, a Circle D 245 mm torque convertor takes the place of the standard unit, while an uprated input shaft has been added. A QA1 carbon-fibre propshaft is also part of the mix, as are a Torsen limited slip mechanism and Ford Performance crownwheel and pinion and Driveshaft Shop half-shafts.
When on the road, the Mustang wears a set of 22-inch wheels shod with a 285/25 front and 245/30 rear rubber. On the drag strip, it switches to 17-inch slicks (with a parachute and a six-point rollcage also on the cards).
Furthermore, RGM has fitted a number of Steeda accessories to uprate the handling, including Stop The Hop hardware on the rear axle, a roll centre/bumpsteer correction kit up front and adjustable anti-roll bars at both ends. Dampers have been uprated with a KW Variant 3 coilover kit.
A set of 10-piston Vari callipers and matching discs are added up front, with the stock items unchanged at the rear due to the necessity to run 17-inch wheels on the strip. Inside, the rear bench has been binned and the front pair replaced by racing seats and harnesses.
