Rolling out new vehicle after new vehicle, Chinese automaker BYD is set to launch its Shark bakkie today but its specifications have already been revealed. Have a look at what this impressive Raptor rivalling model is all about below.

Measuring 5 457 mm in length, 1 971 mm in width, and 1 925 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3 260 mm, the BYD Shark boasts substantial dimensions that are slightly larger than Mzansi’s most popular offering; the double cab Toyota Hilux. Built on BYD’s DMO platform, which stands for off-road capability and dual-mode functionality, the Shark is designed to excel in a variety of driving conditions.

Under the bonnet, the Shark boasts dual electric motors with a front-mounted 1.5-litre combustion engine. Up front, a total of 170 kW of power and 310 N.m of torque are produced, while the rear motor generates 150 kW of power and 340 N.m of torque. That is a total of 320 kW and 610 N.m and with this setup, the Shark can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 160 km/h.
Equipped with a 29.58 kWh battery pack, the Shark offers an NEDC battery range of 100 km, ensuring sufficient range for daily driving needs. Additionally, its combined NEDC range of 840 km ensures long-distance travel without the need for frequent recharging. As a hybrid vehicle, the Shark consumes 7.5 L/100 km, providing a balance between electric and conventional power sources.
Inside the cabin, the BYD Shark features a modern dashboard with a 10.25-inch LCD screen, complemented by a 12.8-inch center screen and a 12-inch HUD (Heads Up Display). The Shark also offers seamless integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing drivers to stay connected on the go.

BYD is set to unveil the Shark in Mexico, marking its entry into overseas markets. This strategic decision underscores BYD’s commitment to expanding its presence beyond its home market with rumours that this bakkie may even make its way to South Africa, although no further statement on this has been provided at the time of this article’s publication date. Provisional pricing in the American country have also been released with the GL Version costing 899 980 Mexican pesos (around R985 000) and 969 800 Mexican pesos (around R1 060 000) for the GS Version.
